Boreal Region

Canada's boreal region contains approximately one third of the world's boreal forest  and one quarter of all intact forest remaining globally. It is comprised of 7 ecozones distinguished by abiotic and biotic factors.

Fig 1. Boreal Region - BEACONs' Study Area
The study area for the BEACONs Project is defined by the Boreal, Taiga, and Hudson Plain ecozones (Marshall and Schut 1999).The Algonquin Lake - Nipissing ecoregion of the Boreal Shield ecozone was removed from the study area because the tree species of this ecoregion are predominantly non-boreal (e.g., sugar and red maple, black ash, yellow birch, eastern hemlock, eastern white pine, and beech).
